UNDERSTANDING OFFENDERS
IN THE CONTEXT OF FAMILY

Family plays a crucial role in shaping who we are as a person; it has a huge influence on one’s values, beliefs and behaviours. Understanding the history and dynamics of a family can help us better understand an offender’s criminal behaviours.

 

To promote the effective rehabilitation of offenders, there needs to be an understanding and assessment of their family background and situation. Where feasible and appropriate, the families should be involved in offenders’ rehabilitation and reintegration. 

This e-course explains the importance of working with families in offender rehabilitation, how to support families during incarceration stages as well as ways of engaging offenders & their families.

Counselling is essential for addressing the unique challenges and needs of offenders within the correctional institution or community setting. Effective counselling is more than knowing specialised theories and techniques. It is also about possessing the ability to communicate and build a working alliance with the offender, and is a collaborative process of discovering areas of challenges, strengths, and working towards their aspirations.

Addiction is a complex disorder that can have a significant impact on individuals and society as a whole. Research has shown that addiction is not solely a result of poor decision-making or lack of willpower.

 

It is, however, influenced by a combination of biological, psychological and social factors. Understanding these factors, as well as the stages of substance use, can help us identify what needs the individual presents with and provide appropriate interventions.

This e-course will provide an overview of Singapore’s harm prevention strategy and approach to drug rehabilitation. It also explains how addiction occurs and how to help someone who is struggling with substance abuse.
