Enhancing Aftercare Professionalism
Posted on 2010-08-11
In July 2008, during a dialogue session with the Senior Parliament Secretary (MHA) Mr Masagos Zulkifli, a number of key issues pertaining to volunteer management and engagement were raised. On further examination of the state of volunteer involvement in Prisons, it became apparent that there were existing service gaps in the approach to volunteer management.
Prisons value the contribution of volunteers and envisages a long term partnership on the rehabilitation journey. This partnership is dependent on volunteers who are aligned with the objective of facilitating reintegration which then helps reduce re-offending.
With the changing landscape of society, the challenges faced by and needs of releasing inmates are likewise constantly evolving. Thus the skill-sets required of Prison volunteers must also mirror this evolution.
It is recognised that the provision of structured training and development programmes will not only continually seek to renew volunteers’ skills to stay relevant, but also certify their achievement and qualification upon completion of the programmes.
Singapore After-Care Association has been appointed as the agency to conduct this volunteer training. The programme is targeted at all Prisons’ volunteers and will be tiered to cater to the varying needs of the volunteers involved.
All volunteers are required to undergo the basic training programme; while attendance for the intermediate and advance levels of training shall be voluntary and on a needs basis. This basic programme will also be made available to Prisons’ community partners who engage inmate-clients on a regular basis.
How to Keep your Neighbourhood Safe

The Community Safety and Security Programme (CSSP) provides a platform for the community and grassroots to work together with the Home Team and other relevant organisations in identifying their safety and security concerns in the neighbourhood and devise solutions to tackle these problems. Such community concerns include crime and fire prevention, road safety and youth delinquency. Through this partnership, CSSP also serves to foster community cohesion and bonding, and promotes Active Citizenry among Singaporeans. Dear Supporters,
On behalf of Singapore After-Care Association, I would like to thank you for your kind donation to our annual event. As a result of your generosity, $83, 000 has been raised.
The movie starring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith moved the audience with its touching message of life, hope and mentorship. Ex-offenders, whom we’ve given complimentary tickets on donor’s request, were amongst the audience and they told us that the movie amplified the message of getting back on their feet.
Your contribution has made it possible for us to continue our programmes that focus on the transition from in-care to aftercare assisting clients with their job search, accommodation, and finances among others.
Thank you for believing in our cause, reintegrating ex-offenders and preventing recidivism. Without you, our fund-raising efforts wouldn’t have been as successful.
We hope to see you next year!

This year, SACA chooses The Karate Kid as our film for our fund-raiser.
The Karate Kid stars Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith. Although a remake of the 1984 film of the same name, the essence of the movie’s message still stands today and can be related to in more ways than one. The significant values of life, hope and mentorship are things SACA believes in when reintegrating ex-offenders.
Email donate@saca.org.sg or call 6294 2350 if you'd like to purchase tickets to show your support in second chances.
Funds raised will be used to make up the shortfall needed in our aftercare programmes.
